Nia Ben Aur

1 May 2006 | Category: Shows

"Nia Ben Aur" - This was the first production of the older group of Ysgol Theatr Maldwyn with performances at Theatr Hafren Newtown and Ysgol y Berwyn Bala in 2006.

Nia Ben Aur is based on the original legend, where Osian, the prince of Erin (Ireland) falls in love with Nia Ben Aur (Nia of the Golden Hair) from the land of Tir Na n’Og, the land of eternal youth and eternal life. They live together here for 300 years until Osian begins to long for his homeland. Despite dire warnings that if he sets foot on the land of Erin, he will grow old and die, Osian returns on horseback. He discovers that all his friends have died and when he sets foot on the land, his fate is sealed.

Nia Ben Aur was first performed at the National Eisteddfod in Carmarthen in 1974. It was an important milestone for a number of reasons. This was the first Rock Opera to be written in Welsh, the first time that the “rock culture” was recognised on the Eisteddfod stage and the first time that a number of rock groups came together to create a production of this kind. The work reflects the creative scene of the time and the exciting talents that fired popular music in Wales in the 70’s. Composers of the work include: Tecwyn Ifan, Phil Edwards, Alun Huws, Cleif Harpwood, Hefin Elis, Caryl Parry Jones, Geraint Jarman, Iestyn Garlick, grwpiau Ac Eraill ac Edward H Dafis.
